Starship | SN11 | High-Altitude Flight Test

As early as Tuesday, March 30, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 11 (SN11) - our fourth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN11 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 km in altitude. SN11 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN11’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s fourth high-altitude flight test of Starship!

Hi everyone. I'm the High Functioning person who's been helping Elon Musk with my ideas and suggestions over the past year.
I do plan to work at SpaceX where I will help shape our future in space travel.
I'm excited to be possibly getting a job at SpaceX.
Part of why I chose SpaceX is because of my own alien encounter some years ago. I want to find out where that lifeform's civilization is in space but I also want to find out where other lifeforms and their civilizations are too.
With my improved Ion Engine design, I think we can achieve this future.

Elon Musk, his companies, I love you all! You should have made a magnetic rail tunnel embedded in the earth at a 50 degree angle of exit about 7 miles long, and you could launch all the fossil fuels into space using less than a third of the fuel,(will only be needed for vector control and stabilizing) which is one of the primary expenses, using solar energy, transmitted from space using massive mirror arrays located in the north and south pole that reflect and focus massive amount of solar energy into orbital generators that transmit power back to earth via tight microwave beam, routed then via cables to the world.(transatlantic cable etc) You then can modularly launch humans , materials , fuel into space safely using the sun. It would be far safer and efficient and better in every way. You can launch modular massive 3d printer arrays that can land on a planet and establish a setup for landing and housing before you even arrive. Using a simple tapered cone for insertion landing on a pad, like a mating fit would eliminate many issues. It would be a simple frame construct sleeve affixed to a landing platform created as well by the 3d printers. I love you all, but the most ironic thing has occurred. Your companies literally have every technology to do this , and are leading most, yet you are choosing archaic methods over reasoning and higher scope logic, risking lives and material and wasting time. Is it oversight, I imagine so, or you are already building one. These are the only two options. So, you have to be able to see in time if you really want to mastermind how to travel in space. Otherwise you just waste it. The 60's HArp project proved you can do this as well, yet with a magrail tunnel, it could launch everything, safely, humans and all, using the sun, using fossil fuels where they actually won't cause us harm; in space.
If anyone is presuming to judge me, just know that Yale and Standford representatives came out to me when I was 15 to test me because of what happened in HighSchool. They said this, not me, that I am a creative genius off the charts. A borderline genius with numbers and such, and I have excellent coordination, which effects more than just the body. I have already created the fastest form of human powered transportation, which is a new form of bicycle that has a 1.5 times gain over any other bicycle or human powered set up , period. I also just hacked my own cooling technique in which one of the presidents of the company that I acquired certain components from contacted me because no one has ever used their technology like I have, and I am achieving superior results all across the board, efficiency, safety, performance.
I really hope all you arrogant naysayers wake up and learn how to find true masterminds, and not just assume things so much, BYE!

Even though Elon says that failures can teach you something, they did switch cameras in the engine bay from the one (engine 2) that was failing, to a different camera that places that engine behind the others. Sadly, the flight computer did not pick up that engine failure and tried to start it back up FIRST, despite having an obvious fault, Startup on the other engines ignited the un-lit fuel coming form engine 2 causing the explosion. Poor John had to comment on positive things, despite knowing what went wrong - NOT saying "Da**, it just blew up!!!".

In my opinion, Starship is too heavy to land like a lunar lander, it's also too long, so landing something of this magnitude would actually be impossible to do standing like a lunar lander. First option, you want to land flat for one like a plane, but more like a harrier jet. Second option, use multiple rockets to ferry parts into space that are prefabricated to make a bigger vessel then build it in space and use that to fly to and from mars, the bigger vessel stays in orbit, then you use smaller shuttles to go to the surface. That may seem more viable than trying to land a heavy object shaped more like a fat sharpie marker so that it stands with its nose straight to the sky to take off immediately after work is done. The idea of smaller crafts landing on mars is more acceptable and it's also less likely to be an issue with the planet's gravity and atmosphere. Just land smaller crafts with the same idea as making them land like a harrier jet. But this is my opinion, and I think that this idea would work 10 times better if the test simulations were tried and the results were more accurate. Starship is a great concept, but it needs a few additional adjustments to make it work

When starship gets hot gas thrusters and self-levelling landing legs it wont be a problem. I remind you that Falcon 9 first stage is likely the same height as the Starship, so the size is not a problem. There is a lot of complexity here and adding wheels, parachutes or additional engines will add a lot of complexity which will affect a lot in the reusability process. VTVL (Vertical Take-off Vertical Landing) rockets have proven to be the most reliable method of reusability and landing and the problems that starships have been having were related to the propellant pressurization and the engines, nothing more Starship needs to be big because its goal is to carry 400m³ of volume and 150t of mass at one and be fully and rapidly reusable. There are no other methods for this, look at the Shuttle that tried small crafts or the Falcon Heavy, which cannot land the center core in most of its flights

Do you have any idea how many technologies on earth have been developed as a result of space exploration? Here’s just a small taste of technologies that have been developed as a direct result of space programs: -Artificial limbs -Scratch resistant lenses -Insulin pumps -Firefighting equipment and flame retardants -LASIK vision correction surgery -Shock absorbers for buildings -Solar cells -Water filtration -Invisible dental braces -Adjustable smoke detectors -Freeze dried foods -CT scans -Baby formula -Air purifiers -Icing resistant aircraft -Camera phones Not to mention countless other technologies. Please educate yourself about what space exploration is doing for humanity. NASA’s budget is less than 1% of the national budget of the US. The amount of money that the US government budgets for NASA for an entire year is less than what the US Department of Defense spends in 2 weeks. And if there were no space programs, we would be no closer to eradicating world hunger or cleaning the oceans than we are now. We’d actually be further from it, considering that modern water filtration technology can be traced back to the 1970s when NASA developed a new water filtration process for astronauts (said process, which uses iodine and cartridge filters, is now the industry standard).

    • Lazarus

      Lazarus

      5 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

@Jean-René PALUMBO Similar principle to a fusion engine, except using solar or fission power to heat the plasma instead. Since those are weaker power sources, the engine is in turn weaker than a proper fusion engine. On the plus side, it is actually doable with current technology. But you're still gonna need chemical rockets as shuttles. The only more efficient option for those are nuclear thermal rockets, and that combination of words tends to upset the average Joe/politician, so good luck getting it to happen.

For a start fusion engines, like useful fusion reactors, still only exist on paper. When someone manages Q>>1, then we'll talk. Second, even if we could build usable fusion engines, they would only be useful in space. A landing maneuver like this would still require chemical rockets.

I have a suggestion for SpaceX for the engine area. Rather than that area being a cylinder, make a dome in the top of that engine shroud. It would do 3 things:
    1) Improve thrust
    2) Improve stability while landing
    3) Reduce the noise
That noise comes from the cylindrical shape of that bottom shroud area. Combining the idea of a "Hemi" engine (where the combustion chamber is in the shape of a dome), I think this would make tons of improvements.

    • Lazarus

      Lazarus

      5 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

The top of the engine bay actually *is* a dome. But an inverted one, and not for the reasons you're describing, because those make no sense. It's primarily due to increased structural strength for the liquid oxygen tank.

And actually, it's not just the noise, but the vibrations that tend to shake things apart. A dome would help stabilize the whole bottom of the Starship. After all, humans have been building dome-shaped buildings for centuries...

#SpaceX Why don't you use the same system for landing as you do with your Falcon rockets and your intended main Starship booster? It works!

    • Lmao.

      Lmao.

      6 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

Starship in particular will be coming from orbital speeds, both on earth and mars and going into a belly flop burns off a lot more speed than descending like the falcon 9 and the first stage. It also has more maneuverability at said angle with its fins. The landing system coming out of that belly flop needs to be able to land in rough terrain and landing like a rocket is much easier than landing like a plane. It also makes it easier to take off again.

There is a better way to land StarShip and the heavy booster.
If the landing pad was made out of a metal grid of sorts and raised 50+ feet into the air, when a space craft comes in for a landing the pad drops as the craft touches down. The pad then does all the breaking so no major legs are needed to cushion the landing. This is a much safer way to land. The drop and break landing pad absorbs all the energy. It can be made very low tech so as not to fail. Come on we can do this!

    • Oort Cloud

@Oort Cloud Yes, I truly believe so. All the mega hard stuff has already be done. Landing a spacecraft on a 100? foot circle for example. Slowing 240 tons down from 5 or 10 mph to zero in 50 feet should not be too hard for SpaceX engineers.

@Oort Cloud I'm sure the Ford Pinto engineers said the same thing. It comes down to, too many things have to go right for the catch a booster to work. Why design something harder than it has to be? A simple design that works is always better.

I,m not an engineer but as I've seen the lift and landing, in case of landing maneuver it seems to have huge momentum that the engines can't harmonize the huge momentum to the required landing momentum or speed.
Perhaps it may need more time as that landing maneuver must start from a reasonably high distance to enable the engines to harmonize the huge momentum, parachuting may be needed to reduce the great pressure created by engines abruptly to absorb the kinetic energy , in turn may lead to destroying the ship.
